Do you believe that Buddy McGirt could help Pavlik become less of a one dimensional fighter?
I know that Loew is a fine trainer, but his consideration for top trainer seems a bit much being as the only considerable one of his prodigy`s is Pavlik. I saw what McGirt did with Gatti and how much he helped to extend his career and I think he`d be one of the best trainers for Pavlik. What`s your thoughts?
Buddy McGirt did a good job with Arturo Gatti and even better with Manny Pacquiao. He gave Pacquiao a right hand to go with his left. He would be my choice for Pavlik’s trainer.
B-Hop studied tapes of Pavlik’s fights and found a fatal flaw: Kelly can’t punch across his body. And because Pavlik’s power is in his right hand, Bernard kept moving to Kelly’s left and away from his power. Bernard did the same thing to Felix Trinidad, but on the opposite side.
Maybe Pavlik’s camp should have studied his tapes rather than Bernard’s to find Kelly’s own weaknesses.
How many great punchers have you seen with power in only one hand? A great right is only good if you have at least a good left. It’s Boxing 101 to move away from your opponent’s power. If you have no power on the other side, your opponent can get almost a free ride if he is disciplined. Boxing 201 says if you’re going to fight a counter-puncher, you can’t afford to miss too often. Kelly missed all night. And B-Hop is a very disciplined fighter. Besides, he is not as old as his age and is always in great shape.
Kelly is a great guy, but he needs a new trainer. He needs to develop his defense, improve his jab and get a left hook. That will take some serious effort, but that’s what he has to do if he’s going to prove that he is one of the elite fighters in the game.
