Passing the Police Oral Exam with Flying Colors

The law enforcement exam is usually made up of two sections, the police written exam and the police oral exam. Many people find the oral exam to be much tougher than the written exam for the simple reason that they aren't sure what to expect and because it is a tough exam. This is the test, though, that determines how high on the eligibility list you will be placed.
The goal of the police oral exam is to determine your verbal skills and for the board to be able to judge how well you think on your feet as well as your overall reasoning abilities. To this end many of the questions will be tough and personal, so if you aren't prepared and answer vaguely the questions will be even tougher. As with any interview, which is what the police oral exam is in essence, there are two secrets that you need to understand and implement to increase your chances.
Be a Salesman
That's right, you have to sell yourself. Forget the idea that this is a police oral exam and consider it a job interview. If you have had any experience with job interviews you will know that it's all about selling the product, in this case yourself. By applying the basic principles of a successful salesman you will greatly increase your chances of impressing the board.
The fact of the matter is that it's not always the most qualified person who gets the job but the person who interviews well, so sell yourself. The basic principle to selling is to show your customer why your product will solve all their problems and address any fears they may have.
In this case, you are the product and the interviewer is the customer so be prepared. Making a list beforehand of how you will meet your customer's needs as well as key points to help overcome their fears or doubts regarding the product, you.
Some of the issues that may arise include your past education, previous employment, contacts on the force and many others. By researching beforehand what your customer's needs and desires are, you will be in a much better position to show how you can fulfill them.
First Impressions Count
The first impression is vital because it sets the stage for the whole interview and since the board has little time to assess each and every candidate you will be judged from the moment you turn the doorknob. If you walk in meek and shy, with your head down and mumble your greeting this will not create the image of a confident person who can handle such a tough job. At the opposite end of the spectrum, if you walk in and are too loud or arrogant you will alienate the interviewers because they will feel you are too bold and may have issues dealing with authority.
Remember that first impressions cannot be reversed so be creative and try to establish a connection with your interviewers in the first few minutes of your interview. With a little small talk, which is bound to happen, you can create a human connection and interviewers are more likely to pass a candidate they like on the police oral exam versus one they have no rapport with.
